I shall call her "Mini-She"

A little late in the notification, but Harriet Elizebeth decided to make an appearance on the 5th December.

It's been a hectic Christmas with two little ones and the invasion of the in-laws. Thanks to everyone for their e-mails and thoughts.

Solaris Jumpstart Clients using ISC DHCPD

Took me a while to figure out why I couldn't get Solaris Jumpstart clients working off a Solaris based ISC DHCP install. Finally figured it out and here's the dhcpd.conf that I used :

# option definitions common to all supported networks...
ddns-update-style ad-hoc;
option domain-name "$DOMAIN";
option domain-name-servers $DNSIP;
option subnet-mask;
default-lease-time 600;
max-lease-time 7200;
# Jumpstart Support
option space SUNW;
option SUNW.root-mount-options code 1 = text;
option SUNW.root-server-ip-address code 2 = ip-address;
option SUNW.root-server-hostname code 3 = text;
option SUNW.root-path-name code 4 = text;
option SUNW.swap-server-ip-address code 5 = ip-address;
option SUNW.swap-file-path code 6 = text;
option SUNW.boot-file-path code 7 = text;
option SUNW.posix-timezone-string code 8 = text;
option SUNW.boot-read-size code 9 = unsigned integer 16;
option SUNW.install-server-ip-address code 10 = ip-address;
option SUNW.install-server-hostname code 11 = text;
option SUNW.install-path code 12 = text;
option SUNW.sysid-config-file-server code 13 = text;
option SUNW.JumpStart-server code 14 = text;
option SUNW.terminal-name code 15 = text;
subnet netmask {
        option broadcast-address;
        option routers;

host jumpstart-client1 {
        hardware ethernet 0:3:ba:4c:ff:7e;
        fixed-address $CLIENT-IP;
        option host-name "jumpstart-client1";
        vendor-option-space SUNW;
        option SUNW.sysid-config-file-server "$JUMPSTART-SERVER-NAME:$SYSIDCFGDIR";
        option SUNW.JumpStart-server "$JUMPSTART-SERVER-NAME:$JUMPSTARTDIR";
        option SUNW.install-server-hostname "$INSTALL-SERVER-NAME";
        option SUNW.install-server-ip-address $INSTALL-SERVER-IP;
        option SUNW.install-path "$INSTALL-PATH";
        option SUNW.root-server-hostname "$INSTALL-SERVER";
        option SUNW.root-server-ip-address $INSTALL-SERVER-IP;
        option SUNW.root-path-name "$ROOT-PATH";
        next-server $TFTP-SERVER-IP;

Obviously, you'll need to edit all of the variables to match your own requirements (Anything starting with a $ will need to change).

It's the 'next-server' that's really the key that's missing from a lot of the other howto's which I found.

Hope it helps someone.

SMH Pull Erroneous Story About Gamer Suicide

Nice to know that the SMH will actually take action when someone points out that one of their web page's front page stories is full of errors.

This whole scenario was shocking and sad, we don't need the media hyping it up and distorting the facts.

Subject: Serious factual errors in story about webcam suicide story

Your posting
contains a number of very serious errors.

Firstly, his nickname was Kuja, not Kudjo; but more
seriously, Mitchell did not broadcast himself over the internet via a
webcam. No forum members thinking he was joking, no rambling for six
hours. This is a complete fabrication.

I think you should take down this story immediately and post a

I've seen some strange things in the years I've been using computers, but this is just wrong.

I can only think of one man who would be frequenting that site.

So how about a Hoffed up SLUG logo?

I finally got around to revamping my password safe application Vault today.

Funny how these things work out. I needed it for work, but I also spotted a thread on the SLUG mailing list about password safes.

Causality is a funny thing.

Time for a new start

Well, I finished my job today. One of the first times recently that I've left a company while it's still running (current count is 5 closed down/bankrupt companies in my wake).

It's a weird feeling to leave behind this group of guys, we built some seriously kick-ass solutions and it was one of the best teams I ever worked with. It just got to feel like I was living in a Dilbert cartoon and, as PHB Murder is still a crime, I decided to make a move.

Got a few days off in between jobs, time to catch up with Daddy duties and finish off the back garden.

I'm ready for the next challenge and it'll be great to be hardcore tech again.

Hi-ho, Hi-ho, it's time to play lego

Time for me to get my lego stash sent over from the UK I think (either that or buy Edward some and 'look after it' for him for a few years)

I saw this and immediately started thinking of all the cool mods you could add to it!

I'm not certain

Heisenberg is driving down the road one day and gets pulled over by a policeman.

The cop says, "Do you know how fast you were going?"

Heisenberg replies, "No, but I know exactly where I am."

It's been that kind of day.......

Day 2 of the 'Swing-a-thon' Earworm

Does ANYONE know a reliable method of getting a song out of their head. It wouldn't be so bad if it weren't the Bruce Willis version of Swinging on a Star.

Failing that, the number of a reliable assassin to take care of Mr Hasselhoff^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^HHardy

I guess I'm off to get a cappuccino, rob the vatican and let Bunny Mayflower have her fun..... (Oh the pain)

Stibbons, you MUST die!

All day long I've had 'Swinging on a Star' stuck in my head. I'm even going to have to go home and watch Hudson Hawk (yes, I have the DVD).

All because of a blog by Mr Hardy

You'll get what's coming to you one day!!!!

Don't forget your angry eyes!

OK, so it's a present for Edward, but he's a bit young for it (and will be for the next 10 years or so!). I couldn't let it just sit in a box could I???

Thank you Chris and Emma - he's great!

Active Directory

I'm currently managing a huge migration from Windows NT Domains to an Active Directory platform (yeah yeah, I know!). I have to say, I'm shocked.

I've not used AD very much before now and I have to say that I'm pretty impressed. Sure, there's a lot of things that (IMHO) they've done wrong, but it's a pretty good platform for what it does. It's not like I'm going to convert or anything, but I'm man enough to admit when MS is the right tool for the job.

I've spent a lot of meeting time considering how I'd do similar things in a FOSS way, I'm coming up pretty blank. I know things like Hula are coming on in leaps and bounds, but the AD stuff I've seen has impressed me. I can cover individual AD components, but there's no integration across them in the FOSS world.

Am I missing something? Is there some AD'esque tool out there which I've somehow overlooked?

RIP Jef (Raskin, not Waugh)

Jef Raskin, a mathematician, orchestral soloist and composer, professor, bicycle racer, model airplane designer, and pioneer in the field of human-computer interactions, died peacefully on February 26th, 2005 surrounded by his family and loved ones. He had recently been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. (Source)

A number of tributes have already sprung up, though I doubt there could ever be enough.

From one life long Mac fan, thank you Jef, your legacy will live on.

Been a bit busy

It's been a few weeks since I last updated my blog, it's time for a quick update.

As most of you know, we've had a new addition to our family. Edward was born on the 14th of Jan, ending a long 9 month wait for Dani and I.

Of course, he has a webpage already (did you expect anything different??) -

Dani and I would like to thank all of our family and friends for their messages. The SLUG flowers were a very nice touch, thank you.

Everyone is home and we're quickly adjusting to life as a threesome :)

Strangely enough, everything else seems to have been put on hold.

These random machinations are brought to you by the letters R, S and S.
